Custom Framing
I order almost all of my framing supplies from Westfall Framing and assemble the frames myself, float mounting the work. Westfall Framing sells wonderful materials including acid-free foam and mat board, UV filtering glazing, and FSC certified lumber that is available in several beautiful types and finishes. Frames are ready to hang using a sawtooth hook.
Check out the gallery below to see photos of paintings I’ve framed previously. Following that is information regarding cost, available wood types and finishes, turnaround, and a list of alternate framing ideas.

Cost
To give you a general idea of cost, a frame for an 8 inch by 10 inch piece would cost around $139.
This number could rise or fall depending on the wood type, finish, the degree to which you want the materials to be archival, and the shipping rates for the supplies.
Quote Breakdown
To give you an idea of cost, here is the breakdown of a quote for an ash frame with a clear finish and a more economically friendly approach to archival materials for an 8 inch by 10 inch painting:
Wood - $37
Acrylic Glazing* - $4
Foam Board & Mat Board - $8
Hardware - $5
Cost of Shipping for Framing Supplies - $25
Labor for Assembly - $60
Total - $139
*Acrylic glazing is used in place of glass. According to the Westfall Framing glazing is “more break resistant, lighter in weight, optically more distortion free, and provides more ultra violet protection than regular glass.”
Wood Types & Finishes
These are all the available types of wood and finishes I currently work with. I’ll make a recommendation for what wood and mat color combination I think will work best for your painting and we will finalize the decision together.
Turnaround
It takes about 3 weeks to frame a painting because of the time it requires for the supplies to be shipped and received.
Alternate Framing Ideas
If you want to frame your own painting, here are some ideas:
Order framing supplies from the same place I do, Westfall Framing (they are awesome!), and have a go at putting a frame together yourself.
Swing by your local art supply or craft store to look for a ready made frame or visit their custom framing department.
Order or pick up a ready made frame from Jerry’s Artarama, my favorite Austin art supply store. I’m a fan of their Gallery Ambiance Wood Frames. Check out their smaller sizes here and their standard sizes here.
If your painting isn't a common size, purchase a ready made frame as well as some matboard. You can cut a window in the matboard with an X-Acto knife so your uncommonly sized art can fit nicely in a standard frame.
If you don’t want to cut matboard yourself, framing departments of art supply or craft stores usually offer a mat cutting service for a fee which will achieve that professional bevel cut.
Tip: ideally when you frame a painting, you don’t want the glass (or plexiglass) of the frame to touch the art. This ensures the longevity of your framed art if it experiences any humidity.
